Stephanie Basile – Half Ironman

Just wanted to take a moment to recognize Coach Skyler.

I started training with Coach Skyler 5 months postpartum after having my first child. I was a mess- physically and mentally. She met me at my worst in both aspects. I was in the worst shape I’d been in probably ever and too stubborn to admit it. She showed me grace and patience during that time.

Months later, I was training for my first half iron man and really struggling. My hormones were still a mess and I went through a period of “darkness” there. Sky showed up consistently and encouraged me to power through (while also encouraging me to seek appropriate outside resources).

Now, 2 years postpartum, I feel the strongest I’ve felt physically probably ever. Mentally I’m finally landing on solid ground. Skyler has recognized this and ramped things up for me. All this to say - she has followed me on my individual journey and adjusted every step along the way. She’s helped me rebuild endurance and strength, but more importantly, she’s helped me rebuild confidence and my identity as an athlete.

Prior to pregnancy, I did VO2 max testing in a lab. I returned this year to have the same testing. My VO2 max in 2023 was 37. At my most recent testing last month, it was 52. During that same testing, the doctor asked this HR zones I train in. I told him the ranges Skyler prescribed, and he looked skeptical. After the testing results aligned with the prescribed zones, he said I am the only athlete in all the years he has been performing the testing to actually train in the correct range – ever. All credit to my genius coach.

Skyler has consistently brought out the best in me. She knows when to press the gas and when to coast a bit. She has led me to success in my first endurance events, and I have full confidence she will lead me there many more times in the future. I’m so grateful to have her on my team.

Thank you!

Steph
