David Hettena
Coach
David is a full-time endurance coach and elite athlete, competing in races from the 10K to the hundred-mile distance, and beyond. A highly active fixture in the ultramarathon community, he has crewed and paced countless athletes to successful finishes in ultramarathons including Western States 100 and the Leadville Trail 100. With 20 years immersed in high-level competitive athletics, David enjoys working with a broad range of athletes, from off-the-couch beginners to elite veterans of endurance adventuring and racing.
All of David’s athletes went pro in something other than endurance sport—working as executives, doctors, entrepreneurs, artists, teachers—often while busily raising a family. Therefore, it is not enough to focus on heart rate, power, pace, and vertical gain, to explain how to organize all the logistics of a well-executed event, and to teach the fundamentals of injury prevention, if an athlete is to unlock their greatest potential.
David has found over time that the greatest results come from coaching the whole athlete, prescribing training that integrates thoughtfully with life’s greater demands, not in place of them. He enjoys taking the time to understand the athlete’s ambitions, their stress levels from work and family obligations, their ever-evolving schedule, sleep quality and quantity, baseline nutrition and hydration habits, and most importantly, their understanding and beliefs about what they are aiming to do and why.
With this perspective front of mind, David develops a unique program for each athlete. Each program addresses an individual’s strengths and weaknesses, considers their injury history, is suited to their local training environment, and carefully manages their acute and cumulative fatigue. Then, he adapts the plan on an ongoing basis to meet the athlete’s evolving needs so they can continually work toward their greatest potential.
