It has been a few weeks since the Leadville 100 and this note is long overdue. I completed the 100 mile trail run thanks in large part to my coach, Kathy Pidcock. Up to four years ago I was not a runner. I had never done a half marathon and only did two short distance races in my life. To imagine that I would be able to run 100 miles in just over a day was not even a thought that crossed my mind. This goes double for anything with ascent or at altitude because I call Chicago my home. Fast forward to a few marathons and a couple Ultras, I found myself at the tail end of 2018 committing to run and finish Leadville. I selected Kathy as my coach because she has gone through the training countless times, has a fantastic track record in the 100 mile distance and brings a lifetime of perspective to her training methods. Kathy set up a training plan starting in December. She suggested the right races to prepare a flatlander such as me for a hilly 100. She showed flexibility in customizing the training schedule to my travel needs (I travel 300 days/year) and attended several of my races to check in on progress. Her approach to HR training was completely new for me and it worked! Moreover, I actually got faster for my shorter distance while training for these races. Kathy’s preparation was so strong every week when she conducted our weekly training call, a sense of organization that transferred to the team meeting with my pacers and crew in the weeks leading up to the race. I felt prepared going into the race and it paid off. At no point during the race did I feel overwhelmed or outmatched by the course. Kathy turned a non-running flatlander with a terrible travel schedule and a demanding job into a semi-competitive jogger who was able to finish the Leadville 100 comfortably in 28:33. Moreover, as I plan my races for next year, I have already asked Kathy to coach me for my next 100. She has more knowledge to share and I wanted to make sure to get a spot in her rotation to continue learning from her remarkable experiences!".Marc wrote: "It has been a few weeks since the Leadville 100 and this note is long overdue.
